Wall Sconce 7' x 7' Pendents 4' x 3'
Calligraphy in 3D explores the movement and expression of drawn line translated into sculptural form. Each character was hand drawn and transformed into three dimensions using paper, structure, scale, and light.
The characters represent emotions and ideas that felt especially meaningful to me at this stage of my life. The large character on the wall is 我 (wǒ), meaning me. The three suspended characters are 安 (ān), peace, 怒 (nù), anger, and 舞 (wǔ), dance.
Using an expressive, xieyi-inspired approach, I wanted to take the gesture and energy of traditional Chinese calligraphy beyond the page turning line into a three-dimensional experience enhanced through light.
